Interview – Joshua Ingram

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

Not that I can remember

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

Everyone should work in service industry or janitorial service. When you serve or clean up after others it gives you better perspective on how to be a good member of society.

What’s currently playing in your ears?

Mostly I “hear” parts of songs I’m working on. They stay in my head for a long time before they fully come out on the paper.

What is one book that changed your life?
Non-fiction: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
Fiction: it’s a tie between Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck or As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?

It depends on the time of day. Before noon it’s black coffee, from noon to 7 it’s water, unsweet tea or gatorade, after 7 it’s bourbon on the rocks with a splash of water.

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.

I got to have a steak with Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary. We got to talk about what it’s like to make music with a purpose. He also got to answer a question I’d had for him since I saw a TV special in the 80’s. He had a weird looking guitar with capos in weird places. When I asked him about it, he said the guitar had been custom made but broke when they shipped it. One of the capos was holding it together.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?

I absolutely hate booking shows. Every venue has a different system and there are difficulties in connecting with the people in charge.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.

I have two and they are the days each of my daughters were born. I could lay out the exact events of both days because they’ve been permanently imprinted on my brain. They are both life changing days because my reason for being here changed.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?

I’d like to go to Spain. I’ve heard it’s beautiful.

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?

Jean Valjean has always had a special significance to me. From the Hugo novel to the amazing musical, the character embodies qualities I hold dear.

How would you like people to remember you?

I would, of course, hope they remember my gifts as a musician, but outside of that, I would like for people to remember me as compassionate and motivated.
