Interview: Derwin Daniels

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

Yes, I used to be a firefighter and I’ve dreamed a few times that I was at a fire scene. Other dreams are way out there floating in air.

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

Traveling out of your country or safe zone is essential. You then realize we are all on the same planet and need to respect each other. We all have the same needs essentially.

What’s currently playing in your ears?

I’m listening to horn sections like Chicago or Stevie Wonder that are isolated. I love hearing the sections blend on the recordings.

What is one book that changed your life?

Isabel Wilkerson, “The Warmth of Other Suns.” Great read to understand the great migration here in the US.

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?

Scotch and soda with a twist of lime. Gets me every time.

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.

Our 10-year wedding anniversary I hired a chef to come to the house and prepare me and my wife a meal. I also hired a piano player to perform dinner music. I told her we were going out and to dress up. She had no idea I had this set up. We had a 5 course meal and danced to the music of the piano player. I was the “man” for a couple of days.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?

I’ve worked in several arenas and one place, (I won’t mention the name) did very necessary work. The upper staff were mostly from the US military and ran the operation as such with intimidation. I think it could have been much more enjoyable without the unnecessary stressors.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.

Witnessing the birth of my children. I just couldn’t choose one day.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?

I’d go to Ghana, West Africa. I’ve traveled there before about 20 years ago and I’d like to visit to see what’s happening there now.

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?

The hulk! I love the transformation when he’s upset.

How would you like people to remember you?

I’d like people to remember me as kind, giving and fair.
