Interview: Lyubov Kay

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?
There’s a particular imaginary place that I always come back to in my dreams. It’s a wooden cottage beside a beautiful beach. The people in that cottage always change and I wake up with a whole new story, but the place is always the same. I know every room, every detail of the kitchen… It’s quite strange that I’ve never been there but it’s so vivid in my mind.

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?
I think every person should experience completing something that they’re extremely terrified of. The adrenaline rush of overcoming an inner fear is incredible. It’s like stepping on stage for the first time. Or visit a country that you’ve never been to alone. Experiencing something you’re afraid of for the first time makes everything else in your life seem feasible, within reach.

What’s currently playing in your ears?
“Ordinary Love” by Roosevelt on repeat!

What is one book that changed your life?
I remember reading “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel García Márquez and although the story itself was fascinating, there was something else that was really special about that book… The way it made you feel like in some moments, time stood still, and in other moments, you were speeding through words in suspense of what’s to happen. I realized that’s the same feeling you get when you listen to certain songs, except here it was done without music, and just words.

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?
Hazelnut latte! It’s simple but it’s something I always get when I’m with family or friends, so I associate the drink with so many positive memories. 🙂

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.
Wow, hmm. I once visited a world-class restaurant for the first time, and I was expecting some mind-blowing experience. Instead, I realized I loved the street food of that city way more! Things really don’t need to be shiny and expensive to have an enjoyable experience.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?
I had a brief experience working with individuals who were really sick and it was extremely hard not getting emotional when seeing people lose their loved ones. I have complete respect for frontline workers, especially in healthcare.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.
Such a hard question!!! I could think back to so many days but a few stand out. Main was my grandfather gathering the entire family for barbeques. He made the most amazing kebabs and those days were so beautiful just spending time with everyone I love! Another was standing at the top of the Machu Picchu mountain in Peru after climbing it for hours. I think it’s less about what I was doing, but more about the calm and peace I felt in those moments.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?
I’d definitely want to fly to spend time with my grandparents!

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?
Scarlett O’Hara! Despite her imperfections and rebellious side, I loved her will to survive and how determined she was.

How would you like people to remember you?
I’d love for people to remember me as someone that inspired them to do something they were scared of before. To not shy away from feeling discomfort, and actually start believing in themselves.
