Interview – Reuben Reuel

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

All the time. My dreams are all connected, it feels like. There are times I’ll have a dream and in that dream, I’ll remember another dream I had but it’ll be in the same universe as the one I’m in at that moment. It’s kinda wild.

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

Loss. It’s really hard to grasp at times but it is absolutely something every person should go through. I’ve had a lot of losses both personally and professionally and as much as it can be terrible to deal with… it really puts a lot in perspective. In my experience, there’s only growth after loss… if you allow it.

What’s currently playing in your ears?

I’ve been listening to Disclosure’s new album Alchemy. I really like it, I’ve had ‘Looking for Love’ on repeat for weeks now.

What is one book that changed your life?

All About Love by bell hooks

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?

A margarita or a Gin & Tonic, 100%

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.

My grandmother’s 90th birthday dinner. I was in LA at the time and wasn’t sure if I’d make it back home for it but I did. We were with her whole immediate family, and it was so nice. What made it so significant, my youngest cousin was born not even two months before her birthday, so we were with the oldest and the youngest member from that whole side of the family.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?

Not necessarily a ‘work experience’ but the process of releasing a song or album is terrible. There is so much that needs to get done and so many steps. First, you gotta register it, then copyright, then release, then promo, etc. It’s too much. I love releasing but the lead-up to it is ridiculous. That and tech week!

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.

I don’t think I’ve had that day yet, although there are many joyous moments in my life, I think that has yet to come

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?

The Maldives for sure

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?

Spider-man

How would you like people to remember you?

Genuine, kind, confident, a risk-taker… and fun

Heather Anne Lomax Shares Music Video For Cathartic Single “Mama’s Sleepin'”

Los Angeles-based Americana/Country-rock singer-songwriter HEATHER ANNE LOMAX has shared a cinematic music video for her empowering single “Mama’s Sleepin'” from her debut album THE DOMAN TRACKS (Blackbird Record Label) released earlier this month. Watch the “Mama’s Sleepin'” music video, filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Taylor Hungerford, directly below.

The video stars actor Todd Lowe (“Gilmore Girls,” “True Blood”) and was premiered yesterday (November 27) via Americana Highways which noted: “This song tackles the harsh reality of having no choice but to live under the authority of a harsh adult head on. [The lyric] ‘Leave us kids alone, don’t you holler while my Mama’s sleepin” is strong, direct, and heavy hitting. Lomax has an authority of her own that comes across loud and clear here in her vocals and in the music; it’s cathartic and empowering.”

HEATHER ANNE says “‘Mama’s Sleepin'” is “a cathartic fuck-you to my adoptive dad, who was abusive verbally, and physically sometimes.”

HEATHER ANNE will celebrate the release of THE DOMAN TRACKS with a special record release show tomorrow, November 29, in Los Angeles, CA at the Troubadour with special guests Manda Mosher and Abby Posner (who are also part of Blackbird Record Label). Actor TODD LOWE will be in attendance, giving out some of the signed headshots that were used in the filming of the “Mama’s Sleepin'” video to random attendees.

THE DOMAN TRACKS consists of eight collaborative songs recorded with the late Michael Doman, formerly the singer-songwriter-producer of the noted ’80s L.A. rock band Broken Homes. The pair cut the intimate material during two years of recording sessions, and they were set aside until HEATHER revisited them following DOMAN’s untimely death from a brain ailment in December of 2020. With LOMAX on lead vocals and guitar, Doman sang duet and added background vocals and the pair enlisted guitarist JEFF SEBENS in addition to support from various other local players to record the tracks live. The album’s engineer JASON HILLER added bass parts later. Stream/download THE DOMAN TRACKS digitally or grab a copy on CD here: https://smithmusic.ffm.to

Interview: Cassidy Marie

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

I have not! But I often experience deja vu, so it feels like it’s a recurring dream when it happens in real-life!

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

I think if people have the means, they should move away from their hometown at least for a year or two! I’m originally from California and have been living on the east coast for six years. Although I miss my family and my hometown every day, I have learned who I am as an individual because I spent time living independently.

What’s currently playing in your ears?

I go to a lot of live shows! So I usually listen to bands that I will be seeing soon. I’m currently listening to Sir Chloe, Joywave, Two Door Cinema Club, and the Kooks.

What is one book that changed your life?

I read The Pearl by John Steinbeck in my early high school years. It really spoke to me because it talked about how greed and jealousy can consume you and be rather toxic. It taught me to stay humble and be grateful for all opportunities that are given to you, as well as to generally wish the best for others.

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?

I love any tiki drink! I think I’ve been to almost every single tiki bar in DC!

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.

I remember my dad took me to a hibachi restaurant and he introduced me to sake bombs! I remember this so fondly because it was one of the first memories that I had of my dad’s and my adult relationship. I think there is a memorable moment for a lot of people where they realize their parents are more than just their parents. This one was mine! My dad has now unfortunately passed, but he was and still is a huge part of my music journey. I first used music to grieve for the loss of my dad, which was such an important tool in my healing journey.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?
I love collaborating with others, but I have had to collaborate with people who aren’t very open minded. It’s so challenging to work with others who aren’t willing to learn or take the perspectives of others.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.
I was 19-years old when I saw Paul McCartney live. The Beatles have always been my favorite band and it was such an honor to even have the opportunity to see Sir Paul McCartny in the flesh! Somehow, we got an upgrade on our tickets and sat in the pit! I cried at least three times out of joy!

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?
I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and would absolutely go in a heartbeat! I love big cities and there’s so many foods in Japan that I would love to try!

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?
My favorite fictional hero is Elizabeth Bennet! She is so unapologetically herself and true to her desires and goals. She also sticks up for herself, regardless of anything. I aspire to stick up for myself like she does.

How would you like people to remember you?
I would love people to remember me as kind and honest. I think the music I put out shows the vulnerable emotions I have a hard time sharing. But in general, I would love people to be inspired by my authenticity.

Americana/Folk Singer/Songwriter Lori Triplett To Release New Album “When The Morning Comes” On March 1, 2024

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Lori Triplett is set to release her third album, When the Morning Comes, independently on March 1, 2024. Produced by ASCAP Award-winning and five-time Grammy-nominated producer, engineer, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Moak, the album was written and recorded over the course of a few years and takes listeners on a thoughtful and picturesque listening journey through topics like self-discovery, finding the will and courage to keep moving forward in deep and dark waters, facing the immortality of loved ones, disillusionment and loss, standing up for yourself, and most importantly, that life is always worth fighting for and trying again when the morning comes.

“I had so many heavy things going on in my personal life making it extra difficult to think clearly about anything,” Triplett recalls of her creative process for writing the album. “I just didn’t really know where music fit into all of that for me, if at all. Most of the songs were written while I faced those things in real time. The songs are so incredibly meaningful and deeply personal to me-they are essentially little snapshots of my innermost feelings and thoughts over the past few years. I had been fighting for a long time to just keep my head above water and get through another day in the face of everything that’s been happening in the world, for my family, and in my own life. I realized that I’ve had to find my own inner strength to face my demons, keep going, keep trying, keep fighting, and keep moving forward when a new day presents itself to me. I’m finally feeling strong enough to handle all the things life has thrown my way these past few years, and I want others who may be feeling the same way to know that brighter days are ahead of them as well.”

The album’s first single, “Hollow White Oak,” was released on September 28th along with its accompanying video, and the song tells the story of a real-life, 300-year-old white oak tree nestled on a stunning, historical, 500-acre plantation outside of Nashville, TN. “We all have places we go-either physically or mentally-to help us reflect and cope, and this tree represents one of those places on this album,” she says.

“All I’m Letting Go Of,” the album’s second single, was released on November 10th and premiered a few days prior at Americana UK, who called it “reflective.” The song begs for answers to questions about what happens after you let it go: hurt, heartache, love, grief, or your past. With lyrics like, “I wanna know where it goes when you let it go. Does it just take a lap and come right back around?” and “Does it ever really leave? Did it move just up the street into someone else’s life?” listeners will find themselves contemplating the same questions about their own experiences. A simple acoustic guitar, piano, and mellotron arrangement perfectly complements Triplett’s pure vocal tone.

Triplett plans to release “Light from Another Room” as the third single on January 19th. The song is an anthem of sorts, reminding us that there is always hope as she sings, “There’s a light on somewhere. I see it cutting through the darkness of my deepest blues. Yeah, there’s a light from another room.” The song offers empathy to those going through rough patches, but it’s ultimately an invitation to start taking steps toward a new and brighter life after experiencing some of your darkest days.

With seasoned touring musicians and session players like pianist and keyboardist Charlie Lowell (Jars of Clay, Hollow Hum), drummer and percussionist Julian Dorio (The Whigs, Amanda Shires, The Lone Below), bassists Matthew Pierson and Kevin Whitsett (Russell Dickerson), and guitarist Paul Moak (Ann Wilson, Madi Diaz, Trent Dabbs), the album is an eclectic mix of Americana, alt-country, and singer-songwriter sounds and stylings that appeals to a wide variety of musical tastes. Listeners may hear overtones of some of her musical influences over the years like Tori Amos, Patty Griffin, Nichole Nordeman, and Jim Croce, to name a few.

“When the Morning Comes is meant to be both an offering of empathy and hope to its listeners as well as a challenge to those who may be going through their own dark times of uncertainty and sadness to not give up,” Triplett says. “But, first and foremost, this album is for my mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. Her strength and selflessness are inspiring to me and everyone around her. It’s a love letter of sorts to her-we don’t always talk about what she’s going through because I think she doesn’t really like to think about it or focus too much on it. She just wants to enjoy her life. These songs say things to her in ways I probably couldn’t say well in normal conversation. They speak so much of my heart about my love for her. She is interwoven in every fiber of this album-directly and indirectly.”

A small-town Ohio native, Triplett has always been told she is an old soul. Happily embracing this title, she has been trusting her own creative instincts, ignoring the outside voices telling her what to write, how to sound, and who to be as an artist, and embracing what makes her uniquely her own artist and songwriter. Like other kindred old souls, she has had a clear grasp of what’s truly important in life from an early age and has been elegantly weaving that perspective into her songwriting and music since she first started writing around age 12, penning clever, thought-provoking lyrics over simple melodies and arrangements and writing contemplative, relatable, honest, and emotionally moving songs.

“My dad taught me to appreciate lyrics and really listen to the story being told in the song,” Triplett says. “He also taught me to never shy away from a sad song. Seeing a strong, grown man you love and admire singing his heart out to a sad Paul Williams love song like ‘Nice to Be Around’ or Dan Fogelberg’s ‘Same Old Lang Syne’ as a child really has an impact on you. It showed me how music can help others express their own emotions and feelings-even where you may least expect it.”

Triplett has performed alongside hit songwriters like Tony Arata, Joel Shewmake, Buddy Owens, Jason Duke, Chris Gelbuda, and Anthony Peebles, and her music has even received praise and attention from worldwide celebrity and Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton on social media. Her additional accomplishments include writing, co-producing, and releasing two full-length albums-her debut album, Dawn (2004), co-produced with Jon Gillespie, and her sophomore album, Safe Place to Land (2009), co-produced with Lee J. Turner, long-time bandmate of country artist Darius Rucker. More recently, she wrote and released two singles, “Crooked Heart” (2017) and “Tennessee” (2018), co-produced with Foster Ferrell, and her latest EPs, Slow Poison (2020) and her first Christmas EP, Coming Home Alone (2020), were both produced by Chad Carouthers.

Interview – Pearl Earl (Bailey)

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

Yes, all throughout my life. I’ve been through different phases of dreams. Lately I’m in a giant house looking for “my” room and sometimes I find it and sometimes I don’t, but it’s always filled with other people and other rooms that all are very unique.

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

Being in a service industry job.

Since I just came home from tour I’m listening to meditation music and 432 deep healing frequencies because I’m detoxing my brain from all the music and socializing.

What is one book that changed your life?

Anything Thich Nhat Hanh, but particularly “The Miracle of Mindfulness”

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?

Michelada with a tajin rim and a tamarind stir stick

Eating dinner with all of the Pearl Earl girls as well as the other band and the booker/sound engineer and our tour manager in Bordeaux on tour. It was a real family style dinner and an amazing way to bond and relax before the show (not to mention the food, drinks and dessert were top notch)

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?

Feeling like you’ve failed at a task that you tried hard to make good. For example, I remember preparing a class and discussion that I was to teach but felt like it didn’t reach or connect with the students in the way I wanted it to.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.

Many days have brought me joy in many ways. Recently, I remember the joy I felt on stage at our first big show on this European tour. It was exhilarating. I also just yesterday was received with such love and sweetness by my partner, sister, and dog when I came home to Long Beach jet lagged and exhausted after this tour, and that was great joy knowing the support I have from my family.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?

My bed. I’m tired. J/K – I would go back to Cebu with my partner and spend time with his family.

Interview – Joshua Ingram

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

Not that I can remember

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

Everyone should work in service industry or janitorial service. When you serve or clean up after others it gives you better perspective on how to be a good member of society.

What’s currently playing in your ears?

Mostly I “hear” parts of songs I’m working on. They stay in my head for a long time before they fully come out on the paper.

What is one book that changed your life?
Non-fiction: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
Fiction: it’s a tie between Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck or As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?

It depends on the time of day. Before noon it’s black coffee, from noon to 7 it’s water, unsweet tea or gatorade, after 7 it’s bourbon on the rocks with a splash of water.

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.

I got to have a steak with Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary. We got to talk about what it’s like to make music with a purpose. He also got to answer a question I’d had for him since I saw a TV special in the 80’s. He had a weird looking guitar with capos in weird places. When I asked him about it, he said the guitar had been custom made but broke when they shipped it. One of the capos was holding it together.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?

I absolutely hate booking shows. Every venue has a different system and there are difficulties in connecting with the people in charge.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.

I have two and they are the days each of my daughters were born. I could lay out the exact events of both days because they’ve been permanently imprinted on my brain. They are both life changing days because my reason for being here changed.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?

I’d like to go to Spain. I’ve heard it’s beautiful.

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?

Jean Valjean has always had a special significance to me. From the Hugo novel to the amazing musical, the character embodies qualities I hold dear.

How would you like people to remember you?

I would, of course, hope they remember my gifts as a musician, but outside of that, I would like for people to remember me as compassionate and motivated.

Interview – Lily Taylor

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?

Yes, there are specific locations that will come up again and again in my dreams. I can’t seem to control when this happens, so I interpret them as little visits, and I am always thankful for them. On my latest album, AMPHORA, I have a song about a dream I had. A giant seal came to visit me in the dream. It snarled at me and could shape shift from one pool of water to another. I decided to write the song because the imagery stayed with me long after I had woken up, and I felt I should do something with these feelings. I decided that the seal represented fear, and that if I could face this fear by re-interpreting it into song, I could release it, into the wild, as it were.

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?

Absolutely every single person in the modern world should have at least three months experience in a service job of some kind. This would change the understanding of class-dynamics in our country, and make for a much more empathetic public, in my opinion. I have long pondered a work-program like this for teens, especially those who have been raised in class-bubbles like private schools.

What’s currently playing in your ears?
Andre´ 3000’s flute.

What is one book that changed your life?
A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?
Club soda with lime.

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.
I recently had the opportunity to break bread with dear friends whom I do not get to see very often. We all brought something to the table, including jokes and stories, and it’s moments like that, that I cherish. Musician Karina Denike makes sure there is something yummy to eat after every rehearsal, and truly, the most magical moments happen when the band can come together like that. I think it translates into the music.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least
enjoyable?
I detest working for idiots. Being told what to do by someone who doesn’t understand what they are talking about, and in turn making things difficult or unsafe for those working for them, is infuriating. I try to avoid this line of work at all costs, but sometimes it can not be avoided.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.
I try to find joy in the every day. This is a new practice for me since the pandemic. Feeling joyful is about understanding self-love and acceptance. I used to have a difficult time with this, as I was told by someone I love very much that I was an embarrassment to them, simply for being me. I didn’t feel I was deserving of feeling joy. I now understand that was a problem of my own making, and there is no time like the present.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination
be?
I am always trying to get back to Santa Fe, NM. I lived for seven years, and I often wonder if I’ll ever be able to move back. You can hike to see petroglyphs and the sunsets are in comparable, plus green chile.

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?
Foxy Brown comes to mind, so does Dana Scully.

How would you like people to remember you?
I hope people remember me for my music!

Interview – Sabina Chantouria

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a particular dream more than once?
Yes, walking backstage and then there’s this red curtain that unfolds and I’m walking out on a huge arena stage overlooking a sea of people.

In your opinion, what is an essential life experience that every individual should undergo at least once?
If I had to choose one, I would say love. It’s the most powerful thing in the world in my opinion. Also, failure and success, easy doesn’t make you grow. And to travel, so you can expand your mind and horizons of the world.

What’s currently playing in your ears?
“If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow right now, I’m totally in love with 90s pop/rock.

What is one book that changed your life?
The Attractor Factor by Joe Vitale. It has a lot to do with the law of attraction and that really fascinates me. I read a lot of self-help books and that one helped me a lot to see new perspectives in order to expand and attract more of what I want in life.

If we’re treating, what beverage would you choose?
Red wine.

Share with us a significant dinner memory that stands out for you.
The very first dinner with my two Georgian cousins in Tbilisi when I was 12, united for the first time since decades back, it was a remarkable and memorable family dinner with exquisite Georgian cuisine.

Can you recount a challenging work experience that you consider to be the least enjoyable?
There are many, like negotiations about artist fees can be frustrating.

Reflect on the day that brought you the most joy in your life.
Wow, there are many special days that has brought me so much joy. Like when I was 19 and I got the call back that I had been chosen for World Championship of Performing Arts in Hollywood with my music, stands out. I fought it was a dream and it took several hours to process.

If you had the chance to jet off anywhere right now, where would your destination be?
Los Angeles and then Hawaii.

Who holds the title of your favorite fictional hero?
Aragon, I’m a big Lord of The Rings fan and Wonder Woman.

How would you like people to remember you?
As loving, bold and brave, living life to the fullest and making music that touched people.
